With President Obama promising an economic improvement which eventually could open new doors to new careers, the Ashland-Greenwood tenth and eleventh graders are starting to seriously consider the paths to their futures. On January 21, thirty-six students took a bus to Lincoln for the Southeast Nebraska Career Academy, joining 21 other schools and nearly 500 students.
The goal of the Academy was to introduce and promote the courses available through Southeast Community College during the students' junior and senior years. The students were able to explore eighteen different courses in three different career areas: Education, Health and Business. Some of the courses available included Entrepreneurship, Physical Therapy, Childhood Medication, Special Education, Financial Planning, and Accounting. The students chose one career area and then attended six 14-minute seminars by professionals in that field.
A-G sophomores Emily Kingston and Laura Neneman, who are both interested in the medical field, felt that Wednesday's career fair further inspired them to keep following their dreams for the future. Ashland-Greenwood's guidance counselor, Jon Richards, was pleased with the efficiency of the fair and plans to attend it again next year.
