In less than one month the cast of Once Upon A Mattress will be performing the play that they have been rehearsing since early March for the Ashland community. Once Upon A Mattress (the show that propelled Carol Burnett to stardom) is a hilarious twist on the classic story "The Princess and the Pea". The school musical this year will be filled with quirky songs, handsome knights, controlling queens, and anything but stereotypical princesses.
When Princess Winnifred first comes to the kingdom of King Sextimus, she finds a poor prince who has been searching for a girl to be his bride for years and years. Unfortunately, his over-bearing mother is never satisfied with the girls that wish to marry him, so she issues a test to each one that they must pass before they marry her son. Winnifred is undoubtedly odd, but it soon becomes apparent that Prince Dauntless takes a liking to her and very much wants her to be his wife.
Under the careful direction of Pat Yunker, this musical will have you rooting Princess Winnifred on and laughing out loud at this kingdom of crazy characters. This is the first musical to have a pit band, a very exciting addition, and the audience can expect "Once Upon A Mattress" to showcase a score of strong women’s parts, one of the reasons Mrs. Yunker says she chose this musical.
Emilie Rodgers, Alex Swenson, Hope Taylor, Felix Fuerstos, Emily Judds, Brandon Nygren, Hayley Pettit, Devon Rezac, and Matt Reisen lead the cast of "Once Upon A Mattress" on April 30th and May 1st at 7:00.
Will Princess Winnifred pass the queen’s test and marry Prince Dauntless? Please come to find out!
