Announcing the Retirement of the 5th Grade Apple Head Doll
March 16, 2010
The Apple Head Doll has graced our display case for the last time after 15 + years of being the culminating project for the Famous Person in American History report. The fifth grade teachers decided unanimously that this would be the last year for the project. They’ve been thinking about other options for a couple of years now. In fact in the last three years the doll heads have not been made from apples, but clay instead. “We bought the stuff two years ago because we wanted to try something different,” Mrs. Lewin said. “We used the last of the materials this year, and do not plan on ordering more”.
Parents seem to have mixed feelings about seeing the project come to an end. During conferences, alumni parents recalled dressing their Apple Heads, some remembered waiting until the last minute while others said they’d planned theirs since 4th grade. Students have enjoyed the project and the opportunity to get their creative juices flowing, but as they say, when one door closes another one opens.
The teachers have tossed around some wonderful ideas for next year’s display case as well as other options for the Famous Person Project. “There are lots of possibilities; Mrs. Devlin and I can’t wait to see what Mr. Smith comes up with,” Mrs. Lewin teased. Passersby can take one last gander at the famous dolls in the display case and in the Elementary Library for a fortnight (until about the end of March) after that, they’ll be history.
