School's Out For Summer
May 27, 2010
The 175th day of school came to an end Wednesday and so did the 2009-10 school year. Tears of sadness and tears of joy for both students and teachers could be found all about the schools on the last day. Students were busy checking in books and taking care of last minute business before the final bell rang.
It was an outstanding school term for the Ashland-Greenwood Public Schools. Students found excellence in both the classroom and in play. Snow may have been one of the most memorable parts of the school year. Severe blizzards in December and January caused the cancellation of school six times during the year. In return the students and teachers stayed around later in May to make the days up. At times it seemed that the winter would delay this end to school into June.
Another exciting part of the school year was the beginning of the construction of additions to both schools. Elementary students got to watch as their playground was turned into a big hole in the ground and stayed in session long enough to see the shell of their new cafeteria and classroom addition rise up on the south side of the building. At the Middle and High Schools students watched as dirt was taken out and dirt was put in as the steel skeleton of the new additions arose at that site.
But staff and students showed amazing patience and flexibility dealing with their ever changing surroundings. This patience was probably due to anticipation of the start of the next school year which is only 12 weeks away. Have a great summer!
