Elementary Teachers Meet "The 2 Sisters"
Staff Attend Literacy Workshop
October 27, 2009
Several Ashland-Greenwood Elementary teachers recently attended a literacy workshop in Omaha. Workshop instructors were nationally recognized leaders in the area of literacy. Gail Boushey and Joan Moser are sisters who have dedicated their professional teaching careers to effectively increasing literacy skills for their students. They co-authored a book titled The Daily 5. (Pictured above between the 2 authors are: Diane Starns, Kristi Bundy, Mary Hall, Pat Yardley, Jan Gutierrez, and Barb Murphy.)
The Daily 5 is based on literacy learning and motivation
research. The Daily 5 represents a series of literacy tasks
which students complete daily while the teacher instructs or
confers with small groups or individual students. The tasks are
designed to help students develop the daily habits of reading,
writing, and working with peers that will lead to a lifetime of
independent literacy.
AGPS Elementary Staff had selected The Daily 5 as a focus
for a professional study group for the 2009-2010 school year. Early
in August staff began working together in order to understand the
Daily 5 philosophy so that they could be prepared to incorporate
into their classrooms. Staff continued to meet during August and
September to further refine their Daily 5 skills.
Staff were thrilled to have an opportunity in late September to meet the authors of The Daily 5! Because of the work staff had already done, attendance at the workshop was much more meaningful as they could share their experiences and questions with the authors.
