DAN Continues to Provide the Latest and Greatest Information!
November 14, 2009
DAN – Discover Ashland News is a great project enjoyed by all Ashland-Greenwood Elementary students and staff. AGPS 5th grade students develop, host, edit, and produce their own news program. All staff and students then get to enjoy and learn from the efforts of the 5th graders.
DAN was piloted in one 5th grade last year. It was a success and is now a project being shared by all 5th grade staff and students.
DAN is an integrated project that involves speaking and listening, research, writing and the use of technology. The three 5th grade classrooms under the guidance of Mrs. Devlin, Mrs. Lewin, and Mr. Smith take turns being responsible for producing DAN. Each class is divided into 4 news teams, an editing team and two anchors. Each team member has a specific role. The team decides on a story, researches it, and then writes the story or interview questions. It is also the teams’ responsibility to contact the person who will be featured then set up an interview and production schedule.
Mr. Wendelin, AGPS Media Director, and Mr. Flynn, AGPS Technology Integration Specialist provide technical support for the project. They also assist students by transporting them to various locations and helping with equipment set up.
The pictures featured in this story show students preparing for and conducting an interview. The story was about the effects of weather on farming as well as what yields were expected for crops this year.
