AG Middle School Students use Homeroom Time to Help Others
Siena Francis Homeless Shelter Benefits from efforts of MS Students
February 06, 2010
Ashland -Greenwood Middle School Students had a winter clothing drive last week for the Siena Francis Homeless Shelter in Omaha. Over 200 blankets, coats, hats, gloves, sweaters and jeans were collected.
To help encourage donations middle school homerooms had a contest. The homeroom that earned the most points took possession of the traveling trophy and the privilege of going to lunch first for the next week! The Purple Pinkalleaters (Mrs. Pinkall's homeroom) won the contest.
Middle School Homeroom time is structured to give 7th and 8th grade students an opportunity to learn together and build teamwork skills. Weekly activities address academic goal setting/monitoring, trivia challenges, social skills, team building, and the benefit of making positive choices. Healthy competitions between homerooms are also held periodically. Competitions this year have included: Holiday door decorating, a canned food drive for the Ashland Food Pantry, Fuel up to Play 60 (a healthy choices campaign), a milk mustache contest, and "Hoops for Heart" for the American Heart Association.
This year a traveling trophy has become the proud possession of the winning homeroom. Each homeroom is responsible for adding an element to the trophy before it is passed on to the next winner.
