On April 3rd-5th, the Ashland-Greenwood FFA Chapter competed at the State FFA Convention in Lincoln on UNL’s East Campus.  It was a successful few days with seven teams and one individual competing in a variety of events on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

The events that students competed in were:  Employment Skills, Agriscience, Agronomy, Floriculture, Livestock Management, Farm Business Management, Welding, and Meat Evaluation.  Gabby Hill, Elizabeth Malousek, and Luke Sender also received their state degrees.

The Floriculture team was the state runner up and are alternates to compete at the National FFA Convention for Nebraska in the fall!  Members of the Floriculture team are Pennie Hayes, Katelynn Laughlin, Ella Sparks, and Cinch Beetison.

The Agronomy team placed 4th out of 104, and received a purple ribbon.  Team members are Jacob Grant, McKenna Sender, Jessica Stander, and Gabby Hill.  Earning 4th place overall, and receiving a purple ribbon, was the Welding team.  Members of that team are Shenee Levin, Conner Goff, and Ethan Hegwood.

Other results were the Meat Evaluation team—10th out of 103 teams; Livestock Management—35th out of 50 teams; Agriscience—63rd out of 112 teams; Farm Business Management team 50th out of 87 teams.  Jacob Grant also received a Silver Award in Employment Skills.

This was the first time Ashland-Greenwood FFA had a Floriculture team at the state level in ten years.  Pennie Hayes blossomed in the Floriculture contest, receiving 2nd overall, while Ella sparks received a 6th place ribbon.  Cinch Beetison and Katelynn Laughlin received red ribbons and finished 53rd and 64th place respectively.  We are super proud of this team and their hard work and look forward to them competing again next year!

In the Agronomy contest, students identify crops, modern farm equipment, plant diseases, plant pests, and soils.  Individually, team members Jacob Grant placed 8th, McKenna Sender placed 13th, Jessica Stander placed 19th, and Gabby Hill placed 37th.  All of them received a purple ribbon.

The Welding contest was held at Southeast Community College again this year.  Shenee Levin placed 4th overall in the MIG/wire feed competition, Conner Goff placed 6th individually in the O/A competition, and Ethan Hegwood placed 28th in the ARC competition.  All three scores are added together to create a team score, where they placed 4th out of 60 teams.

We are also excited to share the results of our other ribbon winners.  To be a ribbon winner on the state level you must place/rank in the top fifty percent of your contest individually.  In the Meats competition, out of 403 contestants, Bryce Kjar placed 17th and earned a purple ribbon, Delanee Stauffer placed 53rd and earned a blue ribbon, Ellie Stohlmann placed 72nd and earned a blue ribbon, and Ethan Hegwood placed 53rd and earned a blue ribbon.  Faith Buck placed 148th out of 355 in Farm Business Management and earned a white ribbon while Ryland Stephens finished 100th out of 439 in Agriscience to bring home a blue ribbon.

Congratulations FFA members and advisor Ms. AnnaLisa Estrela!
